CHOOSING A HOT TUB!
What is available?
There are a large number of hot tubs on the market today. Everything from
simple inexpensive wooden hot tubs to luxurious spa baths with massage
functions. Therefore, prices can vary from EUR 1 000 to more than EUR 20 000.
Deciding on what to choose is a question of knowing what you need and how high
you appreciate comfort. Read our tips here! How many will use the hot tub, and
how often is it normally used? A large hot tub requires more water, a longer
heating time and higher energy costs. This mostly goes for hot tubs. When
considering costs, it is important to realise that buying the wrong item is
also expensive.
Bathing 1-2 times per week?
The cheapest hot tub with a wood burning heater can be enough if you don't
bathe so often, don't need to think about water usage and have your own supply
of fire wood. There is also a gas burning heater option available. In practice
this means that you fill the hot tub with water, heat it and then empty it
after use. It is also possible to install filtration so that the same water can
then be used, in combination with chemicals, for a longer time. If a hot tub is
not used very often, it is especially important to think about the choice of
material. Otherwise leakage problems can easily lead to a situation where it
feels like too much trouble to use the hot tub at all.
Bathe whenever you want
If you simply want to bathe often, without having to spend too much time taking
care of your investment, then consider an alternative with automatic heating
and filtration. The water is then changed 4-5 times per year, and the hot tub
is always ready for use. For this purpose we have developed our Polar models,
which you can read about here.
Choice of material and risk of leakage
Traditional hot tubs are often made of normal pine, spruce, larch etc. that
shrinks a lot when dry and swells in water. A normal problem then is
large leakages if the hot tub has been standing without water for some
time. Some manufacturers therefore recommend keeping water in the hot tub even
when it is not being used. This often leads to bad water hygiene. Note this,
and ask the manufacturer to guarantee that the hot tub won't start leaking even
during dry periods.
Guarantee against leakages!
A hot tub made of special quality heat
treated wood (used by SpaDealers) is not sensitive to dry weather. This
is because the material is already so dry during assembly that it won't shrink
any more. However, it can still expand a little and tighten any small leakages
that may occur during the first time of use. Therefore no water needs to be
kept in the hot tub in order to prevent leakages. As a result, maintenance is
much easier and water hygiene is better. The weight of heat treated wood is also
much less. There is no resin left and the insulation effect is 30% better.
Ecologically right!
Only steam and high temperatures are used during the
drying process, which ensures a natural material without any
environmentally dangerous chemicals. The colour is brown all the way through
the wood. Although the initial disadvantage is a higher price, this price is
really very reasonable after all the benefits are taken into consideration.
Water hygiene
Care is needed to ensure that the same water is not used for a long time,
unless it is treated and filtrated regularly. Otherwise there is a great risk
that bacteria will start to grow and cause a health risk. This is of course,
regardless of which material a bath or hot tub is made of. Many people think
that plastic and stainless steel, for example, will provide protection from
bacteria, which is completely wrong. Filtration is supposed to remove
particles, but has no affect on preventing the growth of bacteria or removing
them. The only safe way to ensure protection from bacteria is to use cleaning
detergents.
Outdoor hot tub in continuous use
A spa bath can have, for example, a massage function with a varying number of
adjustable jets. It can also contain a stereo, TV etc. Perhaps these are things
you don't associate with a relaxing bath? The seats are also usually
ergonomically formed with both better and worse results. One other thing that
is typical for spa baths are that they are insulated in order to withstand cold
weather and be economical in use. This works well as long as nothing breaks
down. If a circulation pump breaks down or if the power is cut, the result can
be expensive repairs due to frozen pipes, pump etc. This is because most
spabaths have the pipes and pump inside an uninsulated service opening. The
same goes for the walls and base. The "shell" itself where the water is
contained, is usually well insulated.
Outdoor bath for Nordic conditions
SpaDealers' Polar models are
totally insulated bubble- /massage baths with advanced functions and solutions,
developed as a result of our wide experience and knowledge.
Polar AquaKing can be said to be something between a hot tub and a spa
bath. It has an insulated cover, bubble system, automatic filtration,
electrical heating and an interior plastic
coating (TubCoat) fitted as standard. Among other things, a massage
function through jet nozzles is available as an optional extra. During
construction, great consideration has been paid to the climatic variations in
the Nordic countries. Everything is well insulated and the Polar can withstand
temperatures as low as -30°. The model can even manage to survive up to
24 hours without problems during a power cut. The effective insulation also
makes energy use low. For 4 hour filtration and maintenance heating, only 4.5
kWh is used per day when the water temperature is set at 37°. Polar is an
outside bath for users placing high requirements on functionality, comfort and
nice handmade woodwork.
Inner surface treatment
TubCoat is a 2-compound polyurethane-based transparent elastic material that
can be "painted" onto the inside of the hot tub to provide an
easy-to-clean durable plastic surface. The material can be used for all
types of wood and hot tubs. We especially recommend its use whenever a
filtration system is used and the same water is to be used over a long period
of time, for example with the Polar. TubCoat is also recommended for normal
wooden hot tubs where leakage problems are
common. TubCoat has made it possible to have a hot tub outside due to the
advantages that plastic provides concerning maintenance. Since the plastic is
transparent, your hot tub will still keep the genuine feel of wood and look
nice.
